Correction: selvedges are not unique to Japanese denim. I've been making clothing for 30 years, and selvedges can be found on nearly every type of fabric I use, including denim, because selvedges stop fabric from fraying in transit. The fiber content or weave might vary, and that narrow width is definitely unusual, but the existence of a selvedge alone is not why jeans made from Japanese denim are unique or expensive. Claiming the selvedge is what makes these jeans special is like claiming they're special because they're made of cotton. The Old Navy jeans I'm wearing as I type this are made of cotton, and I guarantee the bolt they were cut from had a selvedge.

Dyeing with Indigo sucks as it runs all the time. It runs with a touch of water, it runs when it rains and runs when you wash it. And when theres nothing it stains your thighs. I know because I am native tribesman of NE India that uses Indigo to dye clothes. Natural does not always means it is good and it is just the habit of Japanese people to make everything expensive.

Selvedge is a general term in weaving to describe the vertical edges of the piece, where the warp ends, and the weft is turned around for another pass. When you sew, many times the selvedge is cut off, and many fabrics include a blank margin along the selvedge, though the selvedge can also serve as more of a feature in a finished piece. The selvedge is also often a more important place to control, and mark from in many patterns (as opposed to the other two edges). The way you are describing selvedge jeans as a finished edge, strikes me as a shorthand for something else that happens along the selvedge, which has then been turned into the official term. It appears that it not only binds the selvedge, but also stabilizes it, and straightens out the line. When you weave by hand, the selvedge can easily become a little knobby.
