Pioneering motion picture from 1884 by Eadweard Muybridge.

Before the movie camera. 10 years before the "Roundhay Garden Scene" (1888) and 12 years before the Lumiere brothers "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (1886). The eccentric Eadweard Muybridge was creating the first motion pictures.

Using up to 24 still cameras. he first captured time in motion over 140 years ago in a groundbreaking project "Animal Locomotion." His project began with "Horse in Motion" in 1878 and was finally completed at the University of Pennsylvania between 1884 and 1885. This particular set of 24 photographs were made in 1884 involving students from the university.

For someone watching this scene with a mega telescope from 138 light years away, they are still alive and dancing

Seeing things like this cause me to feel something I don’t have a word for.
A mixture of happiness & sadness, a longing for a moment or memory that never existed in my personal experience. Nostalgia that does not belong to me.
Feeling a fondness for someone, and missing them, even though you’ve never met and you don’t even know who they are.
It’s like looking for someone and you accidentally bump into them, “OH! Hey there! You surprised me! You were right in front of me the whole time and I didn’t even realize it! Hahaha!”
Things like this make the people come alive and exist in a way similar to when they really were. They become living, breathing individuals, with movement and color in which we’ve never seen them before. No longer static individuals locked in a 2D, colorless world.
And then you have that moment where you realize, “My god, you really were real, all this time. You were real exactly like I am in this very moment, living a life filled with experiences and emotions just as complex as my own.” 💖💖

I can't believe I'm lucky enough to witness this amazing technology that could be described as time travel to people of the era in which this video was originally recorded. Someday we will feel as close as they do, hundreds of years apart.

She has her hand to her side instead of his shoulder. There must have been many ways of dancing the waltz for ladies depending on country. The man is definitely in charge here. So interesting.
