The gas company does need to come onto the property sometimes, but they don’t legally need to ask permission to access your utility meter in most states (even when behind a fence) because it’s considered a utility easement from the meter to the mainline, incase people didn’t know. They might knock as a curtesy/ for safety but yeah. Also any utility worker of any kind will have a badge, a safety vest, usually a safety helmet, usually safety glasses, equipment of some kind usually, usually steel toed boots, a vehicle with overhead amber hazard lights & the utility company logo and possibly also their company logo if they work as a third party contractor for the utility company and a personal vehicle id#, etc. Lots of identifiers and you could call the utility company to verify. They also will have a “ticket”/ order for the work either on paper or electronically with your address to show you. Beyond that if you refuse they will most likely leave for the day and come back with a higher representative but you may get a fine then, depending on the reasons for refusal. Read your local laws! Look at the blueprints for your property! Don’t go shooting utility workers please and don’t be letting robbers in your backyard either😂 Edit: CALL THE COPS IF YOU FEEL UNSAFE. If it is a utility worker they can easily verify and no harm done. Better the cops come than you accidentally harming a city worker or getting into an unsafe situation
