So much depends upon the individual H.S. graduate's academic needs, interests, and desire in choosing a college or if opting for trade school, if 4 yr university or a Jr. College, etc. Whatever next steps where they will thrive. They need conversation and discussion from their parents throughout their lead up to post High School decisions. In our situation our son desired and needed a 4 year university where he could continue to be provided an environment of soaking up higher academic learning, it's how he's wired. He graduated in 2016 from Purdue University. Since 2012 they have not raised their tuition! More colleges could learn from Purdue re: tuition. Our son graduated High School in 2012, about half his class was set on and passionate about continuing on to college to get a degree. The other half was "YOLO"(you only live once) and had zero interest in even a daily job, be it full time or part time and their parents gave zero direction or requirements that they have one. π I have been a teacher for 40 years and it is so very important that parents regularly engage in these conversatiins with their son or daughter long before the deciding year arises
