Honoring Old Work 💻✨

Finishing a big project as a neurodivergent creator—especially when you’re autistic—can feel like climbing a mountain twice. But what if the secret isn’t pushing harder, but honoring the work you’ve already done? In my full convo with Dr. Megan Anna Neff, she shares how her new workbook was built from years of earlier resources. That’s not cheating—it’s wisdom. It's autistic efficiency at its best.

If you’re neurodivergent and struggle with the idea of repurposing your past work, you're not alone. Watch the full conversation on my YouTube now:

This is such a helpful perspective!! I'm also a writer. I've partially drafted numerous books over a decade or two and haven't finished any ... I've had a break from writing for a couple of years, and am considering whether or not to complete any of those projects. I like the idea of repurposing what I've previously written (before I knew I was AuDHD).

A publisher should definitely let you use your own research, especially if it is pertinent. And you synthesized it? That's some work in itself. Not cheating. It's building on.

What I'm not hearing is whether the publisher weighed in on the reuse of that past material - did they suggest doing this quietly rather than with full transparency?

While I generally don't enjoy paying for the same information twice, if an author openly acknowledges that some of their "new" material has been borrowed from previous efforts then their credibility is better maintained; however only fully retained if that material has been reviewed and revised as needed.

If the same decision to recyle is made without disclosure to the reader, then yeah, it's a cheat. Authors seem to be more accountable than publishers in this regard but ultimately it depends on who has more control.

Personally I don't reuse material without a thorough review and revision; even if the information is largely the same, I don't feel comfortable claiming ownership without having first checked my work.
