Navy Signalmen played a critical role during World War II, serving as the eyes and ears of their ships. Their primary duty was to send and receive visual communications, using signal flags, lights, and semaphore to relay vital messages. In a time before widespread radio communication, signalmen ensured that ships could communicate quickly, even under combat conditions. One of the most famous stories of a Navy Signalman comes from Signalman First Class Douglas Munro. He was the only member of the U.S. Coast Guard to receive the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. Munro led a small group of landing craft to evacuate over 500 stranded Marines while under heavy enemy fire. As he directed the operation, Munro used his boat to shield the Marines from enemy fire, ultimately giving his life to protect them.

He was a Coast Gaurdsman, not a member of the Navy. Mighty Munro joined the Coast Guard to save lives.
He did that. Let's get this dedication right, friends.
