If you're looking at a used vehicle, take a scan tool, phone to look up stored codes, a stethoscope and enough cash for a down payment. Just bought an 05 F150 5.4 3v for $2900. It has a new timing chain, rear main, front main and new transmission. It has 284k mostly highway miles, but it purrs like a kitten. All you hear is injector noise. No leaks or rust period.

I know a couple of guys that had to file bankruptcy because they bought back-to-back-to-back broke down vehicles on loans two rules I live by Honda or Toyota and they require fixing sometimes but they're worth it they usually become good reliable vehicles
