Modern chess is about 600 years old from the 1400s. The queen would only move one square. Our chess was referred to as mad queen chess.

Fortunately, all the pieces in this puzzle moved the same way as in modern chess, except for the first move of pawns, en passant, and castling, none of which are relevant here. If you had a "queen" or "bishop" (called by other names), then you'd see that shatranj isn't exactly chess.

It might be the oldest chess puzzle that we know of, but it’s unlikely that it’s the first chess puzzle ever made.
