American comic book creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird are credited with developing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) media franchise. In New York City, four anthropomorphic turtle brothers named Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo use their ninjutsu training to battle evil. Allies like April O'Neil and Casey Jones, as well as foes like Baxter Stockman, Krang, and the Shredder, round out the cast. The turtles' sensei is a rat named Splinter.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was first developed by Eastman and Laird as a spoof of the conventions of superhero comics at the time. Mirage Studios, the company co-founded by Eastman and Laird, published the first issue in 1984, and it was an unexpected hit. Toy company Playmates Toys obtained a licence to use the characters in 1987 thanks to the efforts of Eastman and Laird. Between 1988 and 1992, the Turtles were the third best-selling toy figures of all time, selling an estimated US$1.1 billion.

An animated series promoting the action figures debuted in 1987 and aired for over a decade. In 1990, when the first film was released, it broke records as the highest-grossing independent picture ever. Many video games, including some made by Konami, have also been released. Due to the negative implications of the word "ninja" in several European countries, the franchise was renamed Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles there.

In 2000, Eastman parted ways with Laird and the Turtles series. Laird sold it to what is now known as Paramount Global from Viacom in 2009. New comic book series, TV shows, films, and video games have all been released as part of the brand.
