I didnā€™t even know there was a possum. I always called an opossum a possum and got corrected a lot as a kid so I just assumed I had misheard it the first time and that it was always an opossum. Hearing that there is a creature called a possum actually makes me feel much better some how.

Opossums don't just play dead when they feel threatened, they also sometimes give you an evil grin that makes you want to play dead.

Most Americans just say possum when talking about opossums making it more confusing

In Mexico we call opossums ā€œTlacuachesā€ and in our mythology the reason their tail has no fur is because they stole fire from the gods by setting their tails in fire

All this time I thought the "O" in opossum was silent.

A brushtail possum lives in the trees in my backyard and I can confirm they do like to scream. It's like some kinda demonic growl, not very fun to hear in the middle of the night lol

So... the slang "playing possum" is scientifically incorrect.

I live in an area with lots of North American opossums. We spell it with the ā€˜oā€™ but donā€™t pronounce it.

Virginian here. Possum is what we call Opossums. I had no idea that there was another similar animal with the short name. Yay learning!

Opossums also have cute little hands like humans. They grab their food and eat it with their hands Like a baby. So adorable.šŸ„°

"Since when did they change it to opossum? When I was comin' up it was just possum."

Possum and Opossum are interchangeable in America. Colloquially many people drop the O. I've never heard anyone refer to them as Opossum in real life and we have them in our yards.

What, a possum doesn't kill you? The stink isn't a deadly neurotoxin? Come on, it's Australia!

Here in Mexico we call them "Tlacuache" and "Excuse me, what is that animal?"

Hearing you say ā€œuh-possumā€ made every hair on my neck stand up.
Itā€™s just possum. The o is silent.
