My retired lab service dog would rather play fetch any day as her reward for learning / doing behaviors than treats and she was one of the most food motivated dogs I've met. It speaks volumes to how engrained her need to retrieve is. She could do hours of fetch if you let her. Her favorite task and the easiest to train was to get items for me I dropped. The task itself was the reward rather than getting to fetch / retrieve after performing other tasks.

100%. Someone on my street got a border collie pup last summer, absolutely stunning dog, but whenever she walks the dog, she pulls the owner all over the place, stalking and trying to round thing up. Myself, my partner and my neighbours were having a little giggle and the woman asked "is this normal behaviour for a dog?", we replied that for a collie it is as it's a working dog. She had no clue. Where I live in Cornwall, there's a lot of collie's as there's a lot of farmers, so the chance of getting a collie down here as a pet, it's a 99% chance it was a working dog that didn't make the cut or came from generations of working dogs, so it's ingrained in them. Stop getting dogs you have no clue about 😫

My uncles dogs were hunting dogs. He found them both dumped along the road his farm was on. They were awesome both in the field and at home. You'd swear they were different dogs. Super focused when hunting but at home, they just loved being around people and getting belly rubs. I miss them so much.

I have two Beagles. They are trained in tracking. Nothing makes em happier than noses down and follow a scent for miles. Understanding your breed is step one, and alas a step all too many people fail at.

Can confirm whippet. Give them something to 'chase' and they are happy dogs. Even if its just bubbles in the backyard. Mine was 'tracking/hunting' after birds when she was 9 weeks old in the backyard.

We’ve got two black labs, both exceptional gun dogs! Bess taught maud everything she knows! They’re the happiest dogs you’ll ever meet! Such funny little personalities too! It’s lovely seeing people keep this alive in the UK!

That makes sense to me. My Rottweiler was a great pet and good with my friends kids, but happiest at police dog training where he could do what he did best. Search, track and stopping the criminal.

So true. When my dogs are working they don't even want a treat or a "good dog". They just want to get on with the work!

my dogs genetics are running, hunting, retrieving, protecting. I let her do all of them and she’s the happiest dog you’ll meet

This is why it is so important to know the breed, before you get the dog!

My lab refuses to fetch. She is trained. I don't take her hunting, but she does come with me for work and travel.

We're still trying to discover what my Rottweiler pup values higher than treats. He's so food driven.

Do you have any experience with Chesapeake Bay retrievers? I have a black lab and have always had labs but just wondering what your prospective would be on a Chesapeake.
