As a 35 year technician it happens way more than you realize. I have personally denied requests from other shop help when they say âtake me for a rideâ and my reply is always ânope, itâs not my car and I donât want responsibility of explaining to the customer why we were joy riding in their car or explaining why it was wrecked etc.â Itâs completely disrespectful and can cost you a lasting relationship with a good customer and can ruin your rep as a trustworthy shop.

I worked at a Mercedes dealership; a customer dropped of his car for maintenance, but a couple of employees decided to take the car to go to lunch. The customer returned to get something from his car, but the car was nowhere to be found until the two jerks got back from lunch; needless to say they got fired on the spot.

Mechanics in South Carolina did the same thing. They wound up by totaling the Corvette. They were fired but the dealership had to pay the bill for a replacement and took a hit on the dealershipâs credibility. For the people saying, âItâs no big deal. Stop crying.â Let that be your car and letâs see if you think, âItâs no big deal.â

I sold motorcycles, part-time evenings and Saturdays at one time.. A customer brought his machine in for its first check up as prescribed at that time I think in the owners manual.. he had his wife pick him up after he dropped the bike at the service department and he left. They told him he could pick it up Saturday..
so he showed up Saturday, but the bike was mostly done, the mechanic just needed to take it for a test drive..
mechanic was doing brake, check burnouts across the parking lot, and when he came back from the test drive, he put the front wheel up against the building, and smoked the back tire for about 15 seconds at full throttle .
The customer went straight to the owner, and calmly demanded a brand new motorcycle, which he got that day. Because, that customer was an attorney.

I left my pickup at a stealership over the weekend (Mr. Goodwrench worked Saturdays) and when i picked it up, the bed was full of tree bark. Someone at the shop had used it to haul firewood. Didn't even try to hide it and clean it out. Every person at every dealership I've ever met was a sleazeball. Never again.

As a tech at a cdjr dealership, I had a customer with a hellcat charger, his complaint was that there was a noise and vibration at or above 130 mph. I took it up to 75, couldn't duplicate so I requested a test drive with the customer. Sometimes it does have to be driven very hard or fast, but as a technician knowing it's not mine I never drive it reckless, some guys do it but it's not cool
