I've always done this but there are some days when I feel like the "flat expressions" look better and others when I don't lol. So I just switch it up once in a while

Some tips for much more dynamic expressions:
-Squish and strech the face!
-Take photos and examine them.
-Use eyebrows: they'll help you a LOT
-Make those pupils in different sizes. Are they scared? Make 'em smol! Did they see their crush passing by? Make 'em bigger! Draw little heart shapes, heck, make them little hearts
-Try different facial features you don't normally draw: Give them a big nose, smol eyes, a big bright smile!
-Wrinkles.

And most importantly,
-Don't be scared to try new things and have fun (seriously, have fun)

Usually, I stick with how Pixar makes their expressions on their characters. Not too cartoony; not too realistic. That or, I try to replicate how the clay faces in Thomas the Tank Engine looked like: Memorable, classic expressions.

I remember figuring out about this a few years ago, it’s crazy how much of a difference it can make

LavenderTowne, you asked for the ‘mouth’ count, so here it is!

Mouth Count: 4

Also, a thank you to you and other people in the comments section for these helpful tips! I’m a young, newbie artist (if you could even call me an artist lol) who is looking to start drawing more as a hobby! These tips are so helpful, and I just want to thank you again!

Have a great day!

Bouncing off of how the mouth is not “tacked on”, the shape of the mouth affects the rest of the face as well w/ how the skin gets pushed around and the fat is distributed!

The easiest way you can implement it is by just having the eyes scrunch a bit when a character is smiling bc the fat of their cheeks is being pushed up, but there’s loads of other ways to show the face morphing to accomodate the mouth. Study ppl irl and get creative!!!

I've always had trouble with the mouth a lot in art, so this is really helpful!

also ofc this is a personal way of doing things, but if I want to make the mouth open or doing something really dynamic, I sketch the shape of the head, draw the mouth first, and then draw the rest of the features.
If you are screaming for instance, your eyes might squint like a big smile as well as be affected by your eyebrows drawing together (I usually draw eyes last bc they're affect by a lot of your other features moving), your nose might be scrunched, and ofc your chin will move.
Also I draw cartoons idk how realistic artists tackle this

Viewing your art as a 3d model sounds like a rly good tactic for form and perspective

Great tips! I also personally like to add depth to a smile or open expression by adding a slight dimple to the edges of the lips. This may not vibe with your personal style, but it's worth trying out if you're curious! ♥

This made my characters look so much better. It makes them look like they're about to speak or just happy, thank you!

I mostly already do it like that, but the tounge-sticking-out was really helpful. I've been stuck on that a while.

I think the flat version fits more into my style, because it's very cartoony.
Thanks for the tips tho!

btw she said "mouth" 3 times lol

I love how they talk so quietly and you can turn it up if it’s quiet or if your in a place where you need to be quiet, it’s ok
