My dad had me pull on a tree he was cutting using a rope hooked to an old red belly Ford tractor. I was about 14 at the time. I eyeballed it and said I was pretty sure the rope wasn't long enough. My father scoffed at the suggestion. The tree top hit the bar on the tractor's three point hitch to which the rope was tied. It was that close. I was mostly unscathed, a couple scratches from flying debris.

Loggers back in the ax felling days used their ax handles because they were about the right length. It’s a handy trick.

My dad can look at a tree, place a stick on the ground and get within 2 inches of the stick when falling trees without a measuring stick. He use to have to harvest trees to heat their home growing up.

I logged for several years and my go to was a plumb bob. Much more accurate..A stick or axe handle moves and shakes whenever your boby moves.

If you know the distance from your eyes to the stick is is simple trig to calculate exactly…

Is it me, or is he not explaining it right?

You didn't explain that you got the 30 inches from the distance from your fingers to your eye forming a 45° angled, right angled triangle.

If you wonder about the technic of a bomb drop or package of supplies you do this same thing they use the sticks of measuring the ground to to top is a declination that angular momentum

Fly drone to top of tree. Turn it off to let it free fall. Measure milliseconds it takes to hit ground. Calculate tree height by using gravity force for falling objects. Super easy and cheap.

Do not follow tip from this short video, there are not enough information to calculate your tree

Depends how far you are away from the stick. If your arm is longer or shorter it's gonna change.

@davidbroadbent3873

And you also get the approximate height of the tree as measured from the base of the tree to the mark on the ground

Don't need a yard stick. Just use your ax. It's 32-36in.

You can use a 45 degree angle and line it up with the top of tree. Then you know that it is 45 degree up at the tree and 90 degree at bottom of tree so A and B are equal and that is your hight of tree
