I always use the collection clear lash and brow mascara (think it's £2.50 in boots n Superdrug) as a primer before I apply my mascara (I'm using the elf lash n roll atm, first time I've used it but it's pretty good!!) and I really wiggle and push up at the roots with it for a good thirty seconds per eye, like I reeeally get up in there with it. when I put my actual mascara on I have to get so close to the roots again that I have to clean up with cotton buds after, but for me it is literally the only way to get any lift into them at all 😭 I don't actually have a lash curler but I bet if you used the curler, then the clear mascara as primer, then your regular mascara, it'd give you a better curl!! I definitely feel ur pain, I hope this helps 😭❣️xo
