Back when this was new, t this was before the internet as we know it existed and anime was incredibly hard to find. As a matter of fact, this is still a few years before we got Toonami on Cartoon Network. The original Dragonball anime was here, asking with Sailor Moon, Samurai Pizza Cats on TV. We also got Technoman (Tekkaman Blade eventually on the WB network and Robotech (Superdinensional Fortress Macross). But we didn't even get all of the Dragonball Z to to the end of the Frieza arc until about a year or two after Toonami started running the show. The last episode we got before they restarted three series as the episode where Goku first encounters Jaice and Burter. Eventually, we started getting anime on VHS a regularly from Suncoast, and once dile sharing showed up, We could get our hands on subbed episodes that hadn't been released released in the US using Kazaq, along with the movies. So we had to make due with low image quality but we got to see all the way up to the end of Z as well as GT. But yeah, back in ancient times, we didn't have to worry about spoilers because they didn't exist in the US lol.

Don’t forget that the movie’s production was made before Kami fused with Piccolo in the manga. So they really didn’t have anything to base this off except if Toriyama told them, which most likely wasn’t the case
