Kunafa recipe
Kunafa is a popular Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded kunafa dough cheese, and sweet syrup.
Ingredients
For the Kunafa Base
250 grams thin vermicelli or kunafa dough
2tbsp melted butter
2 cube processed cheese (like mozzarella or akawi), shredded or sliced
1/2 cup cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
For the Sugar Syrup
2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 tsp lemon juice or rose water
1 tsp rose water or orange blossom water (optional)
For Garnish
Crushed pistachios
Instructions
Prepare the Sugar Syrup
1. In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Heat over medium-high heat until the sugar dissolves.
2. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 7–10 minutes.
3. Stir in lemon juice and rose blossom water, if using. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
Prepare the Kunafa Base
Using your hands to crush down the thin vermicelli or kunafa dough into smaller pieces.
Mix the vermicelli or kunafa dough with melted butter until well coated.
Assemble the Kunafa
1. Grease a pan with good amount of butter
2. Spread half the thin vermicelli or kunafa dough evenly in the pan and press down gently.
3. Spread the cheese evenly over the dough. (Optional: Add cream for extra richness.)
4. Cover with the remaining thin vermicelli or kunafa dough by pressing down lightly.
Bake the Kunafa
Kunafa can also be made without an oven on a gas stove on low flame for 2 to 3 minute on both sides
Bake in the preheated oven for 30–35 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven or gas stove and immediately pour the cooled syrup evenly over the hot kunafa. Let it soak for 5–10 minutes.
Serve
1. Garnish with crushed pistachios.
2. Slice and serve warm.
