“Fast Times at Ridgemont High” put it on the map for me, back in the early 80’s.

I'm pretty sure it got substantial airplay on
FM rock stations in the late 70s/early 80s. In the Boston area, anyway.

“American Girl” was recorded on 7/4/1976, but it wasn’t released until February of 1977.

The song was re-released in 1994, however it gained notoriety years earlier - 1982’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” featured the song in the film (but not the soundtrack), and 1991’s “Silence of the Lambs” featured the song in both the film AND in it’s soundtrack (released the same year; 1991).

JIC you were wondering, the highest the original issue of the song ever charted was #40 on the UK Singles Chart.

Petty’s biggest hit was actually a duet with Stevie Nicks. “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” (1981) hit #3 on Billboard’s Top 100.

Petty’s biggest solo hit was “Freefallin’”(1989) which peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Incidentally, this song was the third track on Petty’s first solo album (“Full Moon Fever”).

And when it comes to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, his most successful hit was “Don’t Do Me Like That,” (1979) which made its way to #10 on the Hot 100.

My personal favorite is 1989’s “Runnin’ Down A Dream.” This song only hit #23. The reason I like it is because, whenever I am driving and listening to this song, I feel an inclination to drive fast. The song moves you. This song makes you want to move fast. Or maybe I just love American blues rock. 🤷‍♂

Mary Jane's Last Dance was something they knocked out in relative minutes to round out a greatest hits album to fulfill a obligation to their first label so they could get out from under a predatory contract. Even his 'throw away' music was better than other bands crown jewels. It was also the last time Stan Lynch played for the Heart Breakers.
