Don Burgett, 101AB in WW2, recounted that his squad had a battle with a German Machine gunner. He yelled to him, "Surrender" and the German guy yelled back "why the hell should I?!". Burgett and he then traded insults until Burgett asked how come you speak English so well, to which the German answered, "I got ten years in New Yawk City, mac!" ๐

We treated our prisoners so much better than they treated their prisoners! The horrors I have heard from a few Vets is frightening!! One was put into a German POW camp which he described was almost like a concentration camp. He said that "after his bomber was shot down, they found him in the countryaide, hanging by his parachute from a tree. The Germans found him and took him prisoner. He had a severely broken arm, a severely broken leg, cracked ribs, etc. He was in bad shape, however, they took him to a POW hard labor camp with no medical treatment for over a year! His bomber did like 109 vital missions in the war before him and his crew were shot down." Most of the guys died, but he survived. The Germans finally had a doctor look at his injuries over a year later and said, "This man needs a hospital!" He told the doctor, " You think!"๐ฎ๐๐
๐ฎ๐๐โค ๐ขHe was a wonderful man and used to love hearing him tell me his stories as Captain of that bomber. He had pics of it and his crew and there was a big painting that an artist had created as a reditiin of his plane! He also had 3 books that he was mentiined in for his vital role in the war. When he died, his family did not even know all these acts of heroism and his stories, so after the funeral, I told them as much as I could. He was an amazing man, small in physical stature but huge in American history!! RIP, Maxwell!!! I miss you and our talks!!! ๐ข๐โค I would have listened to every tale, I loved it so much!! You were like another grandfather t
