The cartoon series with adult Anakin tells us what Luke's life was supposed to be.
There was a hidden planet, it was kept this way by an extremely powerful force user who could easily be considered a god. He mastered both sides of the force and saw that it was neither good or evil, it was only the weak that latched on to one side or the other. He was dying and thought Anakin was the one to replace him, he was wrong, again released one of his two children, one was pure evil, the other pure good, the good one was murdered upsetting the balance.
When Anakin left it left no room for question, was obvious Luke was meant to be the one. Luke's fate was meant to see him alone on a planet unable to leave because his role was to balance the force for the entire galaxy and use the force to call to people but never to interfere, only to keep the balance.
If the movie had stuck to this background Luke's actions have made more sense, but they didn't want a powerful man in the show anymore so they made him worthless.
Luke being unable to leave would have made sense. Luke offering training on the planet would have made sense. Luke showing up as a force ghost would have made sense.
They just wanted to trash men and star wars.
