In somatic practices, involuntary movements like muscle twitches, spasms, or tremors are not random or pathological. Instead, they’re often understood as the body’s innate way of discharging stored survival energy, energy that may have been trapped in the nervous system during past overwhelming or traumatic experiences. When the body didn’t have the chance to complete its natural fight, flight, or freeze responses in the moment of the event, that energy can remain “stuck” in the system, leading to nervous system dysregulation over time.

Practitioners of Somatic Experiencing (SE), developed by Dr. Peter Levine, often observe that once a client begins to feel safe and connected to their body again, these subtle (or sometimes intense) movements emerge as signs of healing. These discharges can take many forms: spontaneous shaking, limb jerks, gut movements, heat, or cold sensations. Far from being a problem, these are often signs that the autonomic nervous system is shifting out of survival mode and into regulation.

According to many trauma-informed bodyworkers and somatic therapists this process is deeply intelligent. It’s not something to stop, suppress, or fear. In fact, trying to control these sensations can interrupt a natural resolution process.

These physical releases often emerge during practices such as:

Somatic Experiencing
Craniosacral Therapy
TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises)
Emotional Release Bodywork
Breathwork and certain yoga nidra or trauma-informed yoga sessions

Rather than pathologizing these experiences, somatic modalities invite curiosity, compassion, and awareness. When these movements are met with gentleness and understanding, they can mark profound shifts—not only in physiology, but in emotion and identity.

This January, had a bit of a health scare then ended up going in a perpetual loop because I was trying to figure out what was wrong which led to panic attacks very frequently and insane anxiety. Happy to say I haven’t had a panic attack in over 2 months now and your content has been very helpful. ❤

a timely video for me...amazing what the body will throw at you..the way it moves and morphs- easy to catastrophize but if I/we can rationally think that a structural issue would not behave this way we can find peace. Also, a whatever happens I'll deal with it mindset can release the chase for uncertainty to know what every symptom means. We are STRONG and can handle whatever happens- we are more resilient than we think.
