The key difference between smoke and steam is that smoke is a collection of airborne solids, liquids, and gases emitted when a substance is undergoing combustion, whereas steam is heated water vapor that has reached the gaseous phase of water.

Tailpipe exhaust is partly steam from combustion. Ever notice water dripping from a cold exhaust pipe when the engine is running? So smoke contains some steam/water but steam is only water plus whatever vapors may be in the steam ( like alcohol from a moonshine still).

Smoke DOESN'T necessarily contain steam, it may but also may not. Think of smoke\burning as a chemical reaction. Where steam is liquid just changing forms into a gas. 🤷🤷💨

Boil water in a pan when it boils that's steam. Dump out the same pan throw in a flammable source and what burns into the air is smoke from the fire triangle. Water is not part of the fire triangle. Unless you're creating hydrogen but that's water splitting, not the same thing.

Based on the definition you read all steam is smoke but not all smoke is steam. Kind of like all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares…. Just my thoughts.

Smoke and steam are two types of gaseous phases of materials. They have different sources as well as different compositions. The key difference between smoke and steam is that smoke is a collection of airborne solids, liquids, and gases emitted when a substance is undergoing combustion, whereas steam is heated water vapor that has reached the gaseous phase of water. Smoke is not the same as Steam. Smoke is burning a combustible material, Steam is Liquid turning into a gaseous state. When vapor cools down it returns to a liquid. When smoke dissipates what was was burning doesn’t reconstitute.
