A human being’s mind and emotions, direction are volatile. We lack the focus of pure unadulterated concentration. He is saying that because of that human tendency, we are unreliable. So, in the alternative, we are forced to turn to the outside world and create an external devotion to an idol, like stones and wood, which although are perishable, for their lifespan, remain stable and fixed. They have no tendency to vacillate. They become a very useful tool. They can teach us inward focus so that we, too, can learn the discipline of stillness. It is all quite fascinating. I have an old yantra from the 70’s. I should dust it off and start using it again. It was quite helpful back then. I was amazed that upon focusing on it, it would literally come alive and focus my attention with its joy.
