Our brains store memories, we know that. But what if other cells in our body could store memories too? A new study shows just that! Scientists at New York University have discovered that nerve and kidney tissue cells can learn and form memories just like brain cells.
When researchers exposed these cells to different chemical signals, they activated a "memory gene", just like in brain cells. This gene enables the cells to recognize information and form memories. Even more interesting is that these cells also responded to the "mass-intermittent effect". That is, just like us, they remembered better when they repeated the information at intervals!
This discovery could change our understanding of how memory works and may lead to new treatments for people with learning disabilities and memory loss. Who knows, maybe in the future we can use this discovery to understand how our pancreas regulates blood sugar or how cancer cells respond to chemotherapy.
