When I played in high school there was a wide variety of quality in the courses. Iād say 20-30% of the courses we had matches at actually allowed us to āroll the ball a grip lengthā when in the fairway free of penalty strokes. And even sometimes on greens if there were big bare patches. I think thats generally a fair practice for amateurs. Hell half the time carts donāt even have sand to fix divots. Pga Pros play pristine conditions. Today, even when gambling, if youāre in the fairway, you should be rewarded a decent lie. Itās a gentlemanās game. Having a great drive Middle fairway then Making someone hit their approach from a crater is a dick move. If Iām paying to play at an overpriced course with shit grounds crew, Iām rolling the ball.

You can always use a new ball when starting a hole. You can also substitute a different ball any time you are taking relief, including both free and penalty relief. Unless the one-ball Local Rule is in effect, the substituted ball could be any brand, make or model.

This one had me scratching my head. But if I read the rules right, because they're playing preferred lies under Local Rule E-3, I do believe the player is allowed to substitute the original ball with no penalty. Good one sir! š
Although something tells me that he needed to mark his ball to insure his relief was within the allowed distance...I'm so confused now

I believe it is a 1 stroke penalty for not marking your ball before taking relief. switching your ball when taking any kind of relief free or penalty is completely legal

No penalties unless local rule for one ball is in effect (which is often the case in tournaments). You don't have to mark when taking relief and can use another ball even if original ball is not damaged when taking relief.

I think it would be two. No penalty stroke for not marking the ball because it was within that scorecard length for preferred lies, but a general penalty for substituting a ball that was not scratched or cracked to the point it was unplayable.

Only time you can change ball out is if you and playing partner deem ball damaged, and un playable. From possibly hitting tree or cart path. So never carry an extra ball in pocket. Specially on putting green you could play wrong ball.

No penalty strokes. There is no requirement to mark the position of the ball. A player may substitute a ball whenever they are taking relief. The ball is placed once, within a card length, and no nearer the hole. All good.

2 stroke penalty or loss of hole. you must start and finish the hole with the ball that was teed off you may change ball at the start of next hole
