The fact CELESTIA still loved Sunset Shimmer despite of her not living in her footsteps really shows how Celestia was a like a mother figure to Sunset, and really loved her as her own child than as her student. Which was so heartbreaking for CELESTIA when Sunset became evil and had to banish her.
