According to my uncle who served in WWII, soldiers were given several doses of penicillin right before they were demobbed to prevent them bringing home syphilis to their wives. I'm not sure whether the wives would even have been able to get penicillin. I know that it was was reserved for the military for quite some time.

Imagine being a soldier in a camp, who just got back from a long day of fighting, was excited to hear that there was a new supply delivery, expecting food, clothes, or toiletries, only to find it full of condoms.

I cannot recall who, but someone from the early days of condom invention and usage described them as, "armorplate against pleasure and a cobweb against disease." Sadly this era was also fraught with condom reusage. They were costly, hard to obtain, and many ppl would wash and reuse them until they were falling apart. That is ALL the ick.

Yes. Nobody ever stops to think about how lucky we are for modern advancements when it comes to Syphilis!!! I have Late Stage Lyme Disease right now at this point in my life and let me tell you... Its not fun. I can only IMAGINE adding Syphilis on to my plate! (For those who don't know, because these two infections are caused by the same type, or species, of bacteria called Spirochetes. Which are actually the same type that love to hang around in our mouths, I believe... šŸ¤” LOL.
Anyway, thanks for the random fun fact , MDJ!

Churchill was advised that condoms could protect rifles & similar large military weapons. He ordered condoms three times the normal size. Then ordered that the boxes be labelled ā€˜Condom. Made in Britain. Medium sizeā€™. Hope it helped the war effort.

How lovely that the government only cared to protect their peopleā€™s health while they were fighting for the government šŸ™ƒ

They used to call it M. Gallicus (french disease) because the first epidemic in europe broke out when french soldiers came back home from war in Italy.

i like how in the 17th century, a time when military strategies still involved mostly arranging your soldiers in neat lines and sending them out to the enemy lines to slaughter each other until one side gets scared enough and pulls away, syphilis of all things was that significant a cause for soldier fatalities. i guess youā€™d want to get your fuck on if you were in the front rank the next battle, double pay is NOT enough for that

Imagine your army going down not because of bullets or ā€œthe enemyā€ or explosive but

Because they couldnā€™t keep it in their pants

(Not trying to shame anyone just poking fun)

I knew a couple who were allergic to latex and said they had to get some kind of animal skin ones, which I didn't think they made.

So they were more likely to die from an STD than they were on the battlefield, while at war. Now that's really sad. šŸ˜”

It's amazing how men can be in a war and still want to have sex. I think the same thing when they show those pathetic scenes of places on earth where everyone is starving but the people still have children dying of starvation. Maybe it's just me, but I don't care about sex in life threatening situations.

FISH?!
After the initial shock, from the idea of using a fish for STD prevention, the jokes practically write themselves.

Soldier 1: Welcome to the afterlife, comrade. Did you die on the battlefield in great glory?
Soldier 2: I'm afraid it was not so.
1: On the battlefield... without glory?
2: Again, not so. It was a woman.
1: Ah! Poisoned food! Women can be so deceitful!
2: Again, not so. Let us discuss something else, lest I die again of shame.
