i was just thinking the other day how its a pity that weapons don't have a "range" stat, only damage and speed factor.
Imagine if for example, a spear has a "range modifier" of 10, and a shortsword has a "range modifier" of 5. If two guys with these weapons were to fight each other the former would gain, say, +5 extra Thac0 while the latter would have a -5 penalty to Thac0. This would simulate how hard it is to hit someone that outranges you.
Does anyone know if later D&D editions do something like this? Im only familiar with 2e due to BG and IWD. I know that in these games longer weapons can be used to hit an enemy that is infront of an ally, but i really wished range would mean something more profound.

I thought speed factor only means how early in the round will you attack - not how many times. For example if a guy with a short sword and the guy with halberd both have 1APR then how (based on your example) can the guy with short sword attack twice before the guy with the halberd makes the attack? Doesnt make sense

On BG1 one of my favourite solo insane no reload runs was a Kensai with a dagger. Took down Drizzt using precisely this tactic.
