I think like anything in life, if you look for it, you'll find it. I was raised Catholic. I had more dark and depressing experiences in my life during that time, since going to church and Catholic school is where we constantly discussed sins, morality, guilt, the devil and hell.
Once I got older and Catholicism wasn't a major part of my life anymore, I don't have those depressing and fearful experiences anymore. I've meditated for over 20 years and feel happiness and love through it. Never had any frightening experiences where people claim to meet the devil because I don't bathe myself in that energy by thinking of my "sins" or the ways I can end up in hell. Even if there are things going on around the world that I don't agree with, I find that I can separate myself from that energy.
Everyone else can do what works for them. Many find happiness and community through the church and it's teachings. That's awesome if it works for them. I can see how it can give order and the feeling of safety to some people in life.

I was interested to watch the children on Halloween who, for the most part, did not even balk at the scary satanic decorations of my neighbors. What would once scare children doesn't phase them anymore.

Halloween in the west is what shradh is in the east, it's a time when the veils in between worlds thin out and thus easier to connect with our ancestors and get guidance from them, do prayers for them etc...for the past couple of years I have been noticing the time of halloween is always almost the same time as Diwali or shradh in India... So probably in the past it was a time to connect with ancestors in the west also but got misguided down the ages .
