The only way to get better at improv is just by doing it. Sometimes you need to communicate with them that you need extra time, but other times you need to just go with the flow and be spontaneous. Otherwise it can cause the players to not do things they may want to do because they know it will only force the other players to wait a whole week or so just so they could do some dumb thing they thought would have taken 20 minutes.

I personally love improvising as a dm having only locations and some stat blocks and letting the party run wild while i find a way to continue the story and add tension on the spot just makes the story feel more flexible and that the players can affect the plot in new and interesting ways there are times where i throw puzzles or shops at the players to give me some thiking time but the randomness is just so fun. This isnt to say that pre planed things are bad they can ve super cool and usually have better detail and descriptions and it lets things feel more fleshed out i just like to leave some things to be made up on the spot.

I run a sandbox campaign where my players can go and do whatever they want, I just improvise every encounter and location. And I can usually have them end up where I wanted them to go anyway and the best part about that is l, they think they got themselves there. Encounters arent always balanced, they're newer players so they dont care that they wipe the floor with some randomized enemies. I would hate to tell them "oh sorry you cant go there/do that" for any reason, I feel it would put a video game style invisible barrier up and none of us play dnd to experience that

See I'm really good at improvising (mainly because I'm bad at preparing) and even I just gotta tell players "you can go there, but I don't have anything built there. If you really wanna let me know so I can write it"
Like being immersion focused is good and all but sometimes you just gotta let them know at some point if you keep going north you're gonna hit the forbidden lands of my ass rolling on the same encounter table for mobs and basic loot

I as a player would probably have to avoid having a DM like you. No offense or anything, but if i make time out of my week and have been looking forward to a session of d&d after a grueling work week, just for going to explore caves to cancel the session until another week i just wouldnt be willing to play like that.

I would like to add context here, I rarely cancel a session just because the players go off script. Improv is very important to the skill of Dm'ing, but sometimes if you spent all week planning an awesome dungeon (which your players said they wanted to explore) and then gameday decide to ignore it... It can hurt. As always just communicating to make sure you're all on the same page is vital.
