Actually what happened here was likely that there was no oxygen left in the water, and they suffocated because of a process called eutrophication, you might want to check the phosphorous load in your ponds because it could hit your other ponds aswell

This is why, in order to live with the land, you need to move with it. Changing and ultimately killing the land is natural when life is centralized to it, IE farming for the sake of cities. The greatest freedom is not speech or bearing arms, it's free migration.
