I always wind out the nut and beat on the nut and shaft. You want it to go in as far as possible, unless you are adding something to the end of the bolt.

Every one of these videos that shows you hammering in these threaded rods you have the nut so far away from the end. You should have the nut at the end of the thread so when you hammer in the bolts you don't screw up the threads
