In many of our command classes, I talk with firefighters from departments who have minimal manpower on the fireground initially. They’ll often share that their manpower may be so low that the chief can’t just be the IC - they may have to pump the engine, move the line, or do other tasks.

👌🏼 If your manpower situation is so low that “the chief” has to get hands-on and can’t be a dedicated incident commander - that may be what you must do. TEMPORARILY.

👎🏼 But I have also seen environments where an IC is multi-tasking due to low initial manpower but CONTINUES to multi-task after plenty of manpower is on scene. THIS IS NOT OK.

⚠️ When anyone is multi-tasking, they’re not focused on either job very well. As manpower arrives on the scene, you must either give up command or give up the task.
