Seriously though, the combination of Thai + Italian basil, while not the same as holy basil, is super good!!
Fun fact, the correct pronunciation of this dish is “pad ga prao” with the R in the last syllable. However, due to a common mispronunciation by Thai people, it is most commonly written in English as pad kra pao, with the R in the wrong place.

Recently, we Thai discovered a cookbook from over 60 years ago that said to add diagonally cut long beans to Pad Kaprao, which overturns the current belief or popularity that Pad Kaprao should not include any other vegetables. 😊

Hi from India.. I grow holy, thai and Italian basil in my garden. Since holy basil is considered sacred here, I have made this dish with a mix of thai and Italian basil too. And it's really delicious!

Italian basil (especially Genovese) is the best substitute for Holy basil that I have found.

Where I live it really hard to find good holy basil and it not year round but I found out Italian basil works find too.

Do you grow your own holy basil? Since it’s hard to find. I’ve been trying to grow them indoors, but they grow so slow.

As I don’t have access to either of the two, I use a mix of Mediterranean basil and mint in 2:1 ratio to get closer to that Thai taste 😅

In Scotland holy basil is very hard to come by, I have to go to a isaan store and hope they aren’t sold out and then freeze it because I know I won’t be lucky next time 😂

I literally grew holy basil in my kitchen from seed to make this dish. Honestly, it slaps really hard when made that way, but other types of basil are good too!
