Farmers ants have started to hire mercenary ants to protect their crops from raiders.
Sericomyrmex amabilis, the pleasant fungus farmer ant, cuts leaves to feed a fungus it grows in its nests.
Almost 80% of their nests are also home to Megalomyrmex symmetochus, the mercenary ant, which eats the ants' fungus and even sometimes their babies. For years, scientists thought the mercenary ants were just parasites, but it turns out they defend the nest from the farm raider ant, Gnamptogeys hartmani.
During a raid, the farming species has no choice but to flee and play dead, but the mercenary ants have a chemical weapon that makes the raider ants fight each other by removing their ability to tell friend from foe.
Although the mercenaries cause trouble during peacetime, they are a valuable ally in war.
