Old Stormalong is a legendary figure from American maritime folklore, often portrayed as a giant sailor whose larger-than-life feats capture the spirit of the sea. Stories of Stormalong originated in the 19th century, particularly in New England, where seafaring was central to the economy and culture. His full name, Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, reflected his imposing stature, as he was said to stand as tall as a ship's mast and sail aboard vessels too massive for conventional docks.
One of the most famous tales tells of Stormalong joining the crew of a ship called the Courser. The ship was so large that it required a crew of 500 men, and its sails were made of white linen so vast they could be seen from miles away. In this legend, Stormalong single-handedly saved the ship from disaster numerous times, including battling the mythical kraken and carving out the Panama Canal to avoid sailing around Cape Horn.
