WOW! You go girl, you are one smart helper. I am Taking my IFR Knowledge test at 1:30 today and finding these have been a real help. This sure would have been a lot easier back in 97 to have just stayed with it. Thank you for sharing such great knowledge. Keep them coming, at 63 and going for my instrument, commercial and instructor, certificates so I’ll take all you can share.

Better yet. Imagine the hold fix on the center of the instrument, (HSI or DG). Next, draw a line or imagine the radial to hold on toward the center. Example heading 220 hold on the 060 radial. Draw a line from 060 to the center on instrument. Then imagine the shape of hold in either a left or right turn. You can then visualize the entry. Approaching from the area with MOST of the hold oval it will be direct. Sector approaching the inbound side is a tear drop. Approaching from the hold side towards the inbounded course in the smaller area of the oval, you’ll be crossing the inbound fix if you don’t turn, will be parallel. I have fat thumbs and I cover 35 degrees so this doesn’t work for me.
