Marcus Junius Brutus was born into a noble family and received an excellent education. His mother, Servilia, was Caesar's lover, leading to rumors that Brutus might have been his son. Brutus admired Caesar, and Caesar reciprocated, once forgiving Brutus for betrayal.
But when Caesar declared himself dictator for life, Brutus began to have doubts. He realized that Caesar would not stop at what he had achieved. Influenced by those around him, including the famous orator Cicero, Brutus decided that Caesar needed to be stopped to save the Republic.
In 44 BC, the conspirators attacked Caesar in the Senate. Caesar resisted and even wounded some of the attackers, but upon seeing Brutus among them, he said, "And you, Brutus?" and stopped resisting.
Brutus believed he was killing a tyrant for the sake of freedom, but his action led to another civil war.
