The term "burning season" refers to a period in northern Thailand when farmers and residents engage in agricultural burning practices to clear land for cultivation and manage agricultural waste. This practice is particularly prevalent in the mountainous regions of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and other nearby provinces.

The burning season typically occurs between February and April, although the exact timing can vary from year to year. During this time, dry and windy conditions prevail, exacerbating the effects of the fires. The smoke produced from these agricultural burnings can result in severe air pollution, leading to health issues and reduced visibility in the affected areas.

The Thai government has been implementing measures to address the issue and reduce the negative impacts of the burning season. These efforts include promoting alternative farming techniques, raising awareness about the environmental and health consequences, and enforcing stricter regulations on agricultural burning.
