Martin Luther, 10 Kasım 1483'te Almanya'nın Eisleben şehrinde doğmuş ve 18 Şubat 1546'da aynı şehirde hayatını kaybetmiştir. Protestan Reformasyonunun öncüsü olarak bilinir ve Lütercilik'in kurucusudur. Luther, Roma Katolik Kilisesi'nin bazı uygulamalarını ve doktrinlerini eleştirmiştir, özellikle günah kefaletleri konusunda. 1517 yılında "95 Tez" adlı eserinde bu eleştirilerini ortaya koymuştur. Luther'in reform hareketi, Batı Avrupa'da önemli dönüşümler yaratmış ve Protestanlık'ı ortaya koymuştur. Bu hareket, Kilise'nin otoritesine karşı bir direnç olarak ortaya çıkmış ve yeni bir dini akımın doğmasına yol açmıştır. Luther, Kutsal Kitabın Almancaya çevrilmesinde de önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Luther'in reformları, Batı Avrupa'nın dini, politik ve sosyal yapısında büyük değişikliklere neden olmuştur.
