The federal government is set to begin phasing out paper checks for most federal payments on Sept. 30, according to the United States Department of Treasury.

This includes disbursements such as intragovernmental payments, veterans benefits, social security and tax refunds, a release provided by the White House detailed.

Payments made to the government will also need to be processed electronically "where permissible under existing law," according to the White House.

“Reducing paper checks has been a longstanding bipartisan goal that our administration is finally putting into action," Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. "...This will help reduce fraud and theft. It will also remove delays that prevent hardworking Americans from receiving their vital payments."
