Religious types would say there's a God-shaped-hole in these people's lives, but it could be a meaning-shaped-hole, or it could even just be a community-shaped-hole. Whatever it is, some people might find that a high control group or a political affiliation satisfy this need.
Some of us have buddies we play basketball with, others go to the mosque, a book club, Thursday evening drinking group, whatever, cult members find their cult leader.

I never thought of them as dumb. I thought of them as vulnerable. These people usually join because they are hurting inside for what ever reason. Cult leaders/recruiters appear to be charismatic, empathetic, and most importantly bring them into a community with other likeminded vulnerable people. When you believe in someone or something when in this state, a person is willing to forgo reality itself to hold on to that feeling of belonging.
