Max Baucus might be right about China. But it's American consumers, who like having the freedom of choice where to buy their goods, that will really get hurt. Because even if middle class American decide just to buy American, that would drive up prices here and weaken the supply chain here, because our producers won't be ready for that new, potential, consumer demand.

Donald Trump's tariffs plan has two main problems. It will drive up prices, which drives up inflation, for American consumers, when it comes to foreign products. But it will also drive up prices on American domestic goods, because our companies won't be able to meet any new domestic demand, for consumers that decide to just buy American. Which will weaken our supply chain and make our products more expensive as a result.
