There are a dozen things which can stop i-start/stop working. Mazda just made it clear with those icons what is the stopping factor. Engine - being cold, running DPF cleaning cycle, other issues (conditions), Battery - being low on voltage, AC - causing load on the engine, actively cooling or heating. If it is running optimal on all 3 then it will allow the i-start/stop to function. And correct me if I am wrong, but Mazda uses a capacitor which is changed and powers the car when on stop, and it does not torture the actual car battery, that's why the big display in the same screen showing that capacitor charge.

That’s a good one. Those three conditions need to be met. It’s usually if the AC hasn’t reached the desired cabin temperature. Once it reaches the temperature set on the climate control the condition is met and ok for start and stop.
When the engine isn’t highlighted than it’s running a DPF regen. Confirmed by the high rev upon next start if the regen hasn’t completed before turning off the engine. Overall love my Gen II 2.2 Skyactive D CX-5

The start stop will work with the AC above 21°c not only when it's on, happy new year
