It's crazy that the US didn't get the S50. I've had 2 E36 M3 Evos with the S50, and they are absolutely amazing engines. The only weakness was those double Vanos units, but they could be fixed for not too much money. Some people now say the B58 in my M240i is the best 6 cylinder BMW have ever made, but I'd still say the S50 was. It's not a fair comparison when you're comparing turbo charged to N/A. Stick a turbo on the S50 and then compare it to the B58.

I wish the m50 and s50 were easier to source. They are both great motors that can handle a lot of power in mostly stock form with forced induction. Head studs, a cometic head gasket and aluminum radiator setup is most of what you need. ZF manual transmissions found in the 328i and m3 can handle about 600ft/lbs of torque before needing upgrading based on my research. Even the stock m50 intake manifold can be used in a turbo setup
