So get tested when you get a new partner

Remember you can only ever guarantee you are monogamous, you can never guarantee your partner is.

I work in an STI clinic. We recommend our patients get tested every 3 months for people with multiple partners or annually if in a monogamous relationship. People who report a monogamous relationship always think itā€™s monogamous until itā€™s not.

I asked this to my nurse when I was at Planned Parenthood and they made me feel so crappy for asking... She said "WELL TECHNICALLY ONLY ONCE IN YOUR LIFE" and was so rude about it. I still asked for it anyway despite how she made me feel.

as a gay man i've found that i have to take my sexual health very seriously. it's a personal responsibility that all of us MUST take part in. knowing your status is the most responsible thing you can offer as a sexual partner and under no circumstances should you ever have sex without knowing your status. every new sexual partner is a chance for you to be infected with something, so be careful out there. always look before you go down, always ask the uncomfortable questions, always get tested. you are responsible for your own health and well-being and getting tested frequently is the ONLY way to ensure positive and healthy sexual encounters ā¤

I was a visiting nurse for many in the 80s and 90s, full-blown AIDS. I cleaned up vomit, BMs, bleeding, wounds, in saliva from comforting kisses. We didn't wear gloves, they were very rare. All we knew was transmission by bodily fluids. Maybe, nobody really knew anything back then. After about three years, I didn't have many clients left. Then tested 6 months apart.
Not advocating for swapping fluids at all here. Understand this was Healthcare. Protect yourself, wear a condom
Because of the lack of protective equipment and gowns. Gloves! Out of this was born Universal Precautions.
Assume everybody is infected with something
I was driven to take on this population because everybody else had refused. Their disgust and repulsion was obvious, end-stage AIDS is a horrible thing to see. Thank God for the new meds and treatments,
In my opinion, I would worry more about Hepatitis C, but I digress. Thank you for your time, sorry I rambled so much.
I cherish those years.

Bottom line: talk to your OB/GYN about this question because the frequency varies person to person depending on a myriad of factors.

Hookup culture does make it hard. Iā€™ve never slept with anyone, and part of the reason is that I have a thing about requiring that my partner and I both get tested beforehand (even though id insist on a condom). College makes it difficult for that sort of requirement where Iā€™m from.

I am married, but both my husband and I get yearly health check ups. Itā€™s automatically added to blood screening. Itā€™s billed to Medicare in Australia. Iā€™ve had a needle stick injuries, and also had direct accidental exposure to known HIV infected blood at work (they had AIDS, so very infected/high viral load), so itā€™s for peace of mind in that regard as well. Work takes care of exposure tests, but getting my own GP to test for it yearly is extra coverage.

Yeah so I have to get tested every 3 months cuz Iā€™m on PrEP which means literally none of these answers is right for me. I hate questions like this that require nuanced answers based on specific situations but donā€™t allow for those nuanced answers and try to be blanket statements that fully miss entire groups (and in this case arguably one of the most important groups cuz most queer sexually active ppl get tested every 3 months just to be safe whether on prep or not).

My sister had to take one. A junkie passed out in the bathrooms at the movie theatre she manages. She went to check on him and call 911. I forget what she said happened by some of his blood ended up on a cut she hadnā€™t realized she had. So she had to get tested to make sure she didnā€™t catch something.

This is why you wear gloves and do what you can to leave it to the professionals, person.

Her test came back clean. But if I remember right youā€™re supposed to go back and get tested again later as it might not sure up on a test right away. But testing these days may be better than 15 year ago when I was in high school and learning about STIs and STDs

I wasn't even sexually active the first time they tested me. I don't think they believed me, and I was way too awkward at that point to be like "no really, I'm quite sex repulsed actually". Shockingly enough, the thing I was complaining about (painful periods) was something else entirely!

It also depends on the prevalence in the population you are exchanging bodily fluids with.

Im not active as I'm ace, but I agreed very readily to a test because of past abuse. I was so relieved to get tested even though nothing seemed wrong. I just always had an unsafe feeling, no one could make me feel comfortable until I took that test. I subconsciously knew it would be fine but it still gave me such peace of mind as an SA survivor.

In the UK they do HIV testing with every pregnancy with your first set of blood tests. You can decline but most people do it. When entering a new relationship its a good idea to go together for one. If they person doesn't want to then that would make me suspicious.

I donā€™t have hiv. But I was in a ā€œmonogamousā€ relationship and found out he gave me two stdā€™s because I kept to my yearly screening. I will always get tested every six months regardless of whom Iā€™m with or how active I am. Cause shit can pop up much later.
