Carlo Heinz and Irmgard von Opel took the initials of their names to come up with Chio, which has since gone on to become one of the most recognisable Potato Chips brands in Europe.
Potato Chips were still a relatively new product to Germans fifty years ago. And it was a trip to the USA that gave international show jumper Irmgard, the idea for a Potato Chips company of her own.
The family, among others in the region, grew potatoes, so why not Potato Chips?
The first production facility was set up in 1962, on the family estate Petersau in Frankenthal. Although it has since grown significantly, it is still the main production facility for Chio products today.
The growth in this variety of snack food was exponential and the popularity soon saw regional potato growers tied into supply contracts.
Chio was the first German Potato Chip, and in less than fifty years, the brand has since become known across thirty European countries, and Tortilla Chips, Popcorn and many other snack varieties are sold under the brand name.
In 1968, Pfeifer & Langen, a Cologne based company, began production of Potato Chips under the brand name Chipsfrisch.
In 1977, the company that owned Chipsfrisch joined forces with Chio to form the Convent Gruppe.
The addition of the companies Wolfsbergstrasse and Trüller to the Convent Group in 1995 led to the establishment of Inter - Knabber pastries GmbH & Co. KG.
A variety of further mergers, acquisitions, partnership arrangements and company branding and name changes followed and today Chio is part of the Intersnack umbrella of companies.
