"Nah i think i'll go ahead and do that." Your character dies a horribly gruesome death. "Wow who couldve guessed?!" ... Me. The GM.

On the most fun campaign i had ever designed, the players decided that because the king didnt want to pay them an up front (he had spent all his coin trying to find the lost princess) to kill him... they found out really quick that the king was an imposter kenku/kobold hybrid set up by a the final boss... and then decided not to go on the quest proposed by the imposter. I altered it to where the son of the real king asled them to go on the quest to find his father... they thought it was a trap and killed him too... he was not an imposter... 10/10

Players: "OMG, who could have guessed that would happen?" The DM: "...All of you! All of you could--should have guessed that was going to happen when I asked 'are you sure?'"

Always respect an old man in a profession most men die young in

This also applies to casino dealers or pretty much anyone else who works for tips.

One thing I’ve learned about dnd is that mayors have a target on their has i was playing a game once and we were two groups in the same fantasy world and in the second session both parties killed the mayor independently

I usually feel bad changing my action, because it feels like if I make a mistake I should get the consequences.... so I end up saying that I already did the thing. I go through a LOT of characters in a campaign

I have a campaign I have run a couple of times now. I only had one group ever be a problem. With the exception of the oath breaker paladin (they were aiming for a redemption ark). The party met a group that is supposed to be early game allies. Well, with the exception of the paladin, the party attacked. I flat out told them they would die. They didn't listen or were used to DMs just letting them do whatever they wanted. The one they attacked could most likely solo the group, but they did it in front of her cambion guards. One short fight later, they were all down and angry that I didn't let them win. The paladin and I used the remaining time of the session to give their character a happy ending as the rest quit on the spot. Got an awesome NPC out of it. That became the bodyguard to a character that was important to the character the rest had attacked. Edit: for grammar mistakes.

My experience has been if I ask the question, the answer will always be yes. So I don’t ask anymore. I just let the doom shine.

This is great advice if you don't have a DM that manipulates you into taking actions the hard way around.

Best idea I saw was to start asking players if they're sure at random times even if the action will result in nothing of consequence just to mess with their heads.

Roll for Inititive hears the mayor has a 24 on initive goes first decapitates 2 instantly, the other 2s turn spent trying to run mayor catches them as he has 1.25x their movement speed and ggs

So the mayor was the bbeg and the players killed him ending the campaign shortly?

I'm starting to feel like the "are you sure" response isn't the best one. Almost all the stories involving it have people even more determined to do their dumb action.
