“L'Enfant du Regiment,” by Sir John Everett Millais in 1854-1855.
More about the story behind the painting 👇
The painting depicts Marie, the main character from a popular French opera at the time, titled “La Fille du Régiment.” In the opera, Marie is the young daughter from an affair of an English aristocrat and a French soldier fighting in the Napoleonic wars. When her father dies, his regiment adopts her. Millais didn’t depict any specific scene from the opera, but rather a moment he imagined might have happened prior to the story: the young Marie, having been injured in a battle that broke out a a church, is hastily bandaged by the soldiers and put to rest in a nearby tomb for her protection. She falls asleep as the fighting still rages on.
I’ve always been fond of this painting, but when I looked at it again recently I was particularly moved by it. There are so many tragedies happening in our world right now, and recently I’ve found myself slipping into despair because of it. But there’s something so beautiful and wholesome in the story of this painting: not only is the image of the young girl a reminder of innocence amidst violence, but so are the actions of the soldiers- the fact that despite the chaos and frenzy and desperation of the battle, they prioritized the safety and comfort of the innocent.
Take care everyone, and thanks as always for learning about this moving painting with me ❤

After reading the synopsis of the story behind the painting, I am convinced those men were fighting extra hard to protect that spot. That little girl may have lost a father but gained an entire regiment of big brothers and uncles.

The world would be a much better place if it were run by people who value the safety of children like this

It reminds me of the story of Ayla, a little Korean girl who was saved by a Turkish Soldier Süleyman and was essentially adopted by his regiment until they were ordered to return to Turley and he was forced to leave her. He was fortunate enough to reunite with his daughter 60 years later when a reporter was able to track down where whe was and what happened to her after she was forced to be left at the orphanage. Süleyman never stopped thinking about Ayla and when they finally reuinited she embraced both him and his wife in tears saying how much she missed him. They kept in contact with letters to which she always referred to Süleyman as her father and his wife as her mother, she never stopped being his little girl even when he saw her all grown up with kids of her own. When they reuinited she had brought her children with her and he instantly embraced them. Ayla was with him in his final days, holding her father's hand, when he passed away at 91, and then his wife, her mother the next day.

I also like how it depicts the present (the soldiers), the past (the grave), the future (the girl). A moving piece of art.

No child should experience war, then, now, or ever.

Beautiful heartfelt comments here. Since the beginning of man there has been war, brother vs brother. All we can do is pray, hope & help one another. Love.

All these centuries have passed, and not much has changed. Powerful men start wars, and the innocent children suffer. Yet, a small amount of kind humanity remains.

Something about those dangling little feet. Majestic and tragic at the same time.
