I mean, Mel is indeed overhated, and so is Abby, and not just for what she did to Joel, but she lacked any sort of empathy beforehand. There is a great video that explains how Mel is overly hated when, in her viewpoint, Abby is behaving like a hypocrite. Earlier in the game, they stated that they took out scars/ Seraphites, who were a bunch of kids, and Abby says that they deserved what they got, whereas Mel feels for the kids because they are just kids.
Then suddenly she shows up with two kid Seraphites and she feels bad for them... so in Mel's eyes, she's a hypocrite.

from Mel's perspective, it makes complete sense that she would say that. Abby has never showed any empathy because she was traumatized from the death of her father into believing that all she had to do was kill Joel, and she'd feel better again. because of this, she never showed any empathy towards anyone that came between her and her goal.
for Mel, Abby taking care of Yara and Lev seemed hypocritical, even if Abby was trying to redeem herself and follow the right path after all.

Abby absolutely deserved this because Mel is 100% right her and Abby completely doesnât take in what sheâs saying at all because after this Yara validates Abby and says and completely disregards everything Mel said exactly what she want to her I love this part this is my favorite part from Abbyâs side of the story.

The « she deserves it » argument doesnât sit right with me when the reasoning is only about what she did in the beginning of the game. As much as we feel gutted for what happened she had every right to do it. She is not the bad guy you think she is. Thatâs why I grew fond of her character in TLOU2, because of how it made us feel. Ellie, Joel, Tommy, and Abby have good intentions but theyâve done bad things in a world that wants them dead at every turn. She coped the only way she could, just like Ellie did and Joel did.

I honestly feel so much for Mel in this scene. She is just so done with both Owen and Abby. She's sick of being played with, of being dragged into the drama between her boyfriend and the ex girlfriend he clearly has feelings for and slept with despite being with Mel long enough to get her pregnant. She's just...done. Sheâs harsh and bordering on cruel but she's RIGHT to feel this way.
And on some level Abby KNOWS Mel is right. Thatâs why she nods when Mel calls her "a piece of sh*t". Mel struck a nerve and Abby clearly feels that way about herself too. Hence why she reacts so violently and cries. Itâs just a situation where I get how both sides are feeling and why they're doing what they're doing.
Abby wants to try and be constructive and good for a change after 4 years of absolute hell, grief and loss turning her into a worse person. And poor Mel is just done being yanked around in this stupid triangle and doing nice things for someone who amounts to her boyfriend's mistress.
